The X5 is the outlier, and it’s a genuine choice: sDrive40i buyers save roughly $2,300 over xDrive40i for the identical 375-horsepower engine. That gap is smaller than most shoppers expect, which is exactly why it’s worth understanding both systems before you decide.

What Is BMW xDrive?

BMW xDrive is an all-wheel drive system that uses an electronically controlled clutch pack to shift power between the front and rear axles in real time. Under normal driving, xDrive sends most of the engine’s power to the rear wheels for that classic BMW feel. The moment a wheel starts to slip, the system redirects torque to whichever axle has the most grip. It works alongside the car’s stability control, so the response happens faster than a driver could react manually. 

That’s why BMW markets it as “intelligent” all-wheel drive rather than just AWD. On a wet on-ramp near Plano or an unexpected patch of ice, that split-second adjustment is the entire point.

What Is BMW sDrive?

BMW sDrive is the brand’s rear-wheel-drive designation for its SUVs, first introduced on the 2014 model year X5. It’s true RWD, not front-wheel drive: power goes exclusively to the rear axle, the same layout that defines BMW’s sport sedans. That setup tends to feel a little more direct through corners and typically costs less than the AWD version of the same vehicle. 

sDrive isn’t a stripped-down or lesser system. It’s simply a different one, built for drivers who want that classic rear-wheel feel and don’t need power sent to all four wheels.

The 2026 X5: The One Model Where You Still Get a Choice

The X5 is the only new BMW SUV where this decision still applies. Both the X5 sDrive40i and X5 xDrive40i use the identical 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six, so you aren’t sacrificing power either way. The xDrive40i adds the all-wheel drive hardware, which shows up as a higher starting price and, for most drivers, added confidence on wet or icy roads. 

There’s also a third option worth knowing about: the X5 xDrive50e, a plug-in hybrid that pairs xDrive with an electric motor for a combined 483 horsepower and an estimated 44 miles of electric-only range, for drivers who want performance and efficiency in the same SUV.

BMW’s own plans for the next-generation X5 point toward all-wheel drive becoming standard across the board, following the same path the X1 and X3 already took.
