The BMW X1 Is Anything but Basic

BMW is synonymous with engineering excellence across all of its models, and the BMW X1 is no exception. It is built to last and has superior road handling for its class while being comfortable and fun to drive. Although sleek in appearance for an SUV, the BMW X1 offers a roomy cabin space with generous cargo room (up to 58.7 cubic feet in the 2022 model) and fold-down second-row seating for three passengers. Most importantly, the BMW X1 is a safe vehicle that has picked up numerous IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ ratings over the years.

Under the hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder BMW powerhouse. The 2016 to 2022 models are rated at 241 hp, while the 2023 and later models offer 241 hp in the base xDrive28i configuration and 313 hp in the M35i option. Coupled with a quick-shifting automatic transmission and superior suspension package, this SUV is nimble and a blast to drive. Find a used model with the optional M Sport package, and you will forget you’re in an SUV rather than a sports sedan.

In terms of its fuel economy, the X1 is nearly as efficient as a compact sedan. Despite the power upgrade, the EPA-estimated fuel economy of the 2023 BMW X1 is an impressive 25 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway, a slight improvement from the 2022 and older models. That makes this SUV a penny pincher at the pump, which can be an all-important consideration for road trips and long commutes.

The BMW X1 Interior and Added Tech

The interior of the BMW X1 has a modern feel, with a completely digital dashboard added for the 2023 model year redesign. Plush upholstery covers the seats, providing a luxurious feel, and is available in many color schemes. Upgraded options you can find in used models include leather seats and accent panels for the door trim, giving the interior a definite high-end feel.

Voice controls are a breeze to use, as is the integrated BMW-exclusive iDrive infotainment system introduced for the 2023 model. Apple CarPlay is available in 2018 and later used models, and the 2023-forward models now have Android Auto capability. The premium audio package sounds great for the roomy cabin in the BMW X1.

A power assist liftgate is available on the BMW X1, making loading the rear cargo area more convenient. There are numerous accessory USB charging ports in newer models, and of course, the obligatory cup holders for that morning cup of coffee. The interior and tech match what you would expect in a BMW, even if the X1 is the smallest SUV in the brand’s lineup.

Three Generations of the BMW X1

The first generation of the BMW X1 subcompact SUV was launched as the E84 series. It was designed to meet the demands for a more fuel-efficient SUV than the compact X3 or the midsize X5. Well received during its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2008, it arrived in the United States in 2012.

The second-generation BMW X1 entered production for the 2016 model year as the F48 series. The F48 series introduced a larger cabin with more premium materials and advanced tech features. These updates helped it gain momentum in the US as gas prices were on the rise, and it remains a good buy if you are shopping for a used model.

A third-generation BMW X1, the U11 series, began production starting in 2023. It brought significant redesign in the overall dimensions, suspension, engine, body styling, and interior, and it made xDrive all-wheel drive the standard and only option. The point here is not to go through the entire history of the BMW X1 SUV but rather highlight the years to keep in mind as you are looking at used models.

How the BMW X1 Stacks up Against its Competitors

The BMW X1 plays in the same league as the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3, in most respects. All are established brands in the German automotive industry and have a legacy of fine craftsmanship as part of their lineage. While BMW wears a badge of luxury performance, Mercedes is synonymous with comfort, and Audi lies somewhere between the other two brands.

Priced new at a slightly lower sticker price than the X1, the Q3 shows signs of why this may be warranted. The first indication is the lackluster performance in the Q3, which has tangibly less horsepower (a whopping 57 hp less than the 2023 X1). There is a noticeable lag in its transmission, and the ride quality is just lacking compared to that of the X1. In its attempt to produce a more affordable subcompact SUV, Audi may have gone too far in designing the Q3. These factors wipe out any cost-saving benefits, and the X1 is just more fun to drive.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA subcompact SUV may be a more equal comparison than the Audi Q3 and is sold at a cost that is more in line with that of the X1. The GLA exterior styling is every bit Mercedes-Benz, and the model has the upscale interior detailing expected of this luxury brand. Side by side, the X1 and GLA stand out as stylish and sporty-looking SUVs. The downside of the GLA is the same as that of the Q3––performance. The GLA still can’t quite catch up to the performance of the X1, but it comes close, with a mere 20 hp deficit compared to the 2023 X1. Ride quality and handling in the GLA are also considered better than the Q3, but still no match for the agile BMW X1.
