The BMW 2 Series Coupe arrived in the United States in 2014 in the form of the BMW 228i and the M235i. Designed to be larger than the 1 Series Coupe that it replaced, BMW promised drivers “a distinctive vehicle concept unique in its segment,” and it quite clearly delivered.

The successor to the beloved 1 Series was an instant favorite among luxury subcompact drivers. The BMW 228i Coupe was equipped with the new BMW TwinPower Turbo 2.0L four-cylinder engine, and with its blazing fast acceleration times and 155 mph top speed, it was clear that this was the ideal car for arriving for taking the long way home in style.

Since the BMW M235i was the first M Performance Automobile from BMW to be offered in the US, it was clear that its debut would be special. However, America was likely not expecting just how powerful it would be. Outfitted with a custom M Performance 3.0L inline-six engine, chassis, suspension, Sport Braking system, and exhaust system, every inch of the 2014 M235i was built to increase performance, improve driving manners, and impress drivers.

For its second year on the market, BMW announced that the 2 Series would be offered in both Coupe and Convertible versions with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system so that drivers could enjoy comfort and stability regardless of the weather or the road ahead. It wasn’t long before the BMW 2 Series was earning accolades from critics and experts alike, claiming a 2015 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+ designation and winning the 2017 JD Power Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study for the Small Premium segment.

While every version of the 2 Series is a high-performance car, BMW took things to the next level in 2016 when it unveiled the first M2. This pure performance model takes things to the next level with an even more powerful turbocharged I-6 engine sending 365 hp to the rear wheels. It also sports an upgraded chassis, new suspension, grippier tires, and more powerful brakes, making it ready to go straight from the dealership lot to the Texas Motor Speedway.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe…Then and Now

In 2020, BMW launched the 2 Series Gran Coupe as an “extroverted, performance-oriented entry point into BMW ownership,” which aligns with Texan principles quite well. The 228i xDrive Gran Coupe and M235i xDrive Gran Coupe were not only ground-breaking in their use of standard all-wheel drive but also for being a suitable four-door daily driver in the luxury subcompact class. Though it’s hard to believe today, features like Blind Spot Detection and Front Collision Warning with City Collision Detection were still in their infancy with other manufacturers at the time but were standard on the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Both the BMW 228i and M235i Gran Coupe models were introduced with a 2.0L engine, with the 228i enjoying 228 hp and the M235i tuned to provide 301 hp. A rear-wheel drive version of the 228i was introduced in 2023, but the M235i has always come standard with all-wheel drive. This power source has been highly re-engineered for the 2025 model year, with the 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine adding a Miller combustion cycle, dual injection system, and a newly configured combustion chamber. The result is an increase in power for both versions: the 228 now provides 241 hp, while the M235 offers 312 hp (the “i” was dropped from the model designations for 2025). The original eight-speed automatic transmission was also replaced with a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for a sportier driving experience.

Taller and longer than its predecessor, the 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe provides Dallas drivers with everything they could possibly need to survive and thrive if they find themselves on Route 75 during rush hour. That includes a standard 12-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, wireless device charging, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, and a standard BMW Curved Display, which surrounds the driver with a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display. The new BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Digital Premium allow drivers to use digital music, video, news, and gaming services in their vehicles, along with apps like Spotify, Amazon, and Paramount+. You can even play games with your fellow passengers when the car is stopped.

2025 Updates and Upgrades for the 2 Series Coupe

For the 2025 model year, the BMW 2 Series Coupe will be offered as the 230i and M240i. The 230i is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine producing 255 hp, while the M240i has a powerful 3.0L turbocharged I-6 generating an impressive 382 hp. Each can be selected with or without xDrive all-wheel drive capability. This year, drivers will have the opportunity to upgrade any of these models with the new M Sport Professional Package, which adds M Shadow Line lights and a black M rear spoiler, along with M Sport brakes.

Inside, drivers will enjoy an even larger BMW Curved Display that includes a 12.3-inch Information Display along with a 14.9-inch Control Display. Thanks to the new BMW Operating System 8.5, drivers can adjust not only the cabin climate but also the seat and steering wheel heating either via the Control Display or voice commands. Further cabin updates include a new ambient waterfall lighting feature within the central air vent covers, which lights the footwells, console, and door panels. This display can be personalized in color and brightness, with your choices stored in your driver profile.
